Ok let’s open this one up with a little context on why we’re carrying this wonderful coffee. The story starts back in 2012 – before Laura was a green buyer, she was a very curious barista. As soon as she heard about Cup of Excellence, she immediately made it a goal to attend. So the natural conclusion was to make and sell dozens of french macaron to cover the flight to Guatemala and participate. That week was, well, delicious. Producers sent their best for the competition and there was one coffee in particular that, while it didn’t win, it was rock solid, sweet and clean. Meeting Aurelio Villatoro is like meeting a person who’s a literal ray of light. He regularly placed in the top 10 in the Guatemala COE and he’s just incredibly kind. Impressed by the consistent quality, Laura then made it her goal to buy his family’s coffee – This is the first buy from the Villatoro family for Lüna.
This lot from older brother, Pedro, was brought in by Onyx Importers and they say this:
“Pedro is the strong but silent type. At 58 years old, he says very little, observing until the time is right to ask the perfect question. All of his brothers all respect him a great deal, and when he does speak up they all listen intently. He’s a great listener and open-minded, a very patient and steady person. A crop which takes 7 years from seed to first full harvest benefits greatly from a disposition such as his.”
This lot from his farm, Guayabales, is full of welcome gentle acidity and flavours that remind us of things like green tea and lychee. While in Hoja Blanca its relatively common to see farms that lack pruning and heavy intervention, Pedro uses intense pruning methods which seems to be working well for him. It’s a nice thing to do, as it tends to even out yields from year to year. As longterm goals, Pedro wants to continue his excellent quality, while adding new varieties and processing techniques.
We paid 4.20/lb for this lot after it was imported. Pedro’s brother, Aurelio, holds the export license for the family and Pedro was paid 2.85FOB. We are part of the WCR world coffee research checkoff program for the 10 bags we bought from Pedro, and for this lot, we’re planning a tip the producer program, where after we sell the lot we will move 15cts/lb directly back to Pedro as a thank you for a beautiful coffee.
