Doris Tuiyott along with her farm manager Philemon are growing Batian, while nurturing both the coffee and the farm ecosystem via swamp lands on the site, acting as nutrient cyclers and filters for soil impurities. They’re also producing exceptional washed coffees like this one. This Batian reminds us of mango, macadamia, cranberry, & pomegranate molasses.
Processing
Cherries are floated and soaked overnight before pulping, triple-washed with fresh water, and then shade-dried before moving to raised beds.
More
Little Swamps is a 45-acre farm at 2,200m in Kenya’s Rift Valley, with 13 acres planted with Batian since 2019. Owned by Doris Tuiyott and managed by Philemon, the farm stands out for swamp-fed irrigation, rigorous organics, and washed processing. Doris is expanding plantings while building community through shared seedlings and support.
Little Swamps is a confident name for a farm. It’s gladly holding attention to that mucky messy middle space, that needs to be there in order to get to the final result. With water ecosystems, it’s important to have things like vetiver grass to help filter out waste water, and to help clean up previous pesticides if you’re trying to convert a piece of land into something that can support life well and eventually be certified as organic if you want to make it official.
Can you grow top lots in Kenya without a heavy hand in pesticide use? Little Swamps is an ode to the ‘Of course’.
